Johannesburg - Traffic officers in Gauteng demand bribes and call it “cooldrink money”, Orange Farm Taxi drivers said on Wednesday.

Taxi drivers from Orange Farm in the south of Johannesburg met officials from the Gauteng community safety department at the Orange Farm Taxi rank.

“Traffic cops stop us almost every day and demand to see operating permits, and they know most of us don't have permits and then ask for 'cooldrink money',” said taxi driver Mandla Danisi.

Community safety spokesman Thapelo Moiloa said taxi drivers should refuse and take the names of the officers and their vehicle registration numbers and report them.

Moiloa also gave a warning to the drivers: “Taxi drivers who do not obey the rules of the road will be arrested. Law enforcement is non-negotiable.”

The department received many complaints from community members about taxi drivers speeding and not adhering to traffic rules.

“Residents complain about taxi drivers in the Orange Farm area, that they stop as they like and do not apply basic road safety rules,” Moiloa said.
