London - Almost half of drivers have been so enraged by their cars that they have slammed the steering wheel or kicked the tyres, a UK survey has found.

Nearly one in ten, however, have gone a step further and, like Basil Fawlty, given their vehicles ‘a damn good thrashing’ with something.

Perhaps even more extreme than Basil’s behaviour in the classic episode of Fawlty Towers, nearly one in five admit to having smashed a mirror on their car in frustration.

The survey found 49 percent of car owners feel annoyance, dislike and even hatred for their vehicle around four times a week and complain about it to friends and family an average of 18 times a week.

The biggest bugbears are repair bills, high service costs, poor fuel consumption, as well as rattling and other noises. Sixty per cent say their car is the biggest drain on their finances.

The survey by Kia Motors also revealed that 37 per cent of car owners find driving stressful, with bad traffic conditions, running late and travelling to work being the most common triggers for an outburst.
