Hyundai is about to enter the realm of fast-but-affordable machinery with the release of its new 1.6-litre turbopetrol engine.

Presented in Korea yesterday the engine, which is set to find its way into the Veloster coupe-hatch early next year, is a high-tech piece of work.

Not only does it employ direct fuel injection for optimal economy but it also ensures instantaneous power delivery via a twin-scroll turbocharger. As with Hyundai's normal naturally aspirated engines, it also has dual continuous variable valve timing.

On the muscle scale, it's in the same league as the Golf GTI with outputs of 152kW at 6000rpm and 265Nm at 1750rpm.

Although not officially confirmed, this engine also naturally paves the way for Hyundai to enter the conventional hot hatch market with a performance version of its elaborately styled new i30 hatchback.

In fact, you can expect this engine to find its way into a variety of Hyundai and Kia products and perhaps even a more efficient version of the Sonata.

It seems there's no stopping the Korean invasion.
