Leaked pics showcase next Smart Fortwo

It seems the patent offices in Europe are having a few security catastrophes these days and the latest patent application to be leaked is that of a miniature Smart roadster that looks much like a new version of the previous Crossblade.

Whether the new roadster will be a mainstream offering or a simply a concept car remains to be seen, but you can almost bet your bottom dollar on the fact that what you see here closely previews the styling direction to be taken by the Smart brand's next Fortwo mini car.

If this is the case, the jury is surely going to be out over the new front end design, seemingly inspired by a rodent of sorts, or are we being unfair here?

Meanwhile, rumours also persist of Smart gearing up to offer a stretched version of the next Fortwo, in addition to a two-seater that'll be similar in size to today's car.

The extended wheelbase version will likely offer enough space for four people, allowing it to rival the 3+1 seating format that the Toyota IQ offers.

The rumour mill also points at the possibility of the stretched smart offering four doors, although it will by no means come close to matching the previous Smart Forfour in size.

The next Fortwo range is likely to go on sale by 2012, with hybrid and/or electric versions of the mini car going on sale shortly thereafter.
