Stuttgart - The Mercedes SLC roadster, previously known as the SLK, appears to have run its course, but there could be a far sportier successor on the horizon.

According to Autocar, a new compact sports car that would be designed and marketed as a standalone Mercedes-AMG product, is under consideration and currently in conceptual stage.

Slotting below the current GT sports car, the new sportster could even have a mid-rear engine layout, according to the British publication, and would like share its four-cylinder turbo engines with the upcoming A45 and A35 AMG models.

It would reportedly be available in both roadster and tin-top guises, and would rival Porsche’s 718 Boxster and Cayman as well as Jaguar’s F-Type and Alfa Romeo’s 4C if it is ever replaced.

The compact sports car’s styling would be inspired by the Project One hypercar, according to Autocar’s inside sources.

The project has yet to be given the official green light, so don't expect to see anything surface before 2021.
