Ford's Ranger (just) held on to its position as South Africa's best selling vehicle in June, beating the Toyota Hilux in the Battle of the Bakkies by 3019 to 2912, although both were significantly down in the run-out period ahead of their replacement early in 2016.

The top passenger car performer was Volkswagen's Polo Vivo on 2134, ahead of the Toyota Corolla/Auris/Quest range (1771) and the Polo (1640), putting VW firmly in command of the car segment.

Once again, domestic new vehicle sales were down; the market total fell 4.8 percent to 50 251, compared to 52 785 in June 2014 - and even that was bolstered by light commercial sales. New passenger car numbers at 33 035 were down 2332 or 6.6 percent against the 35 367 new cars sold in June last year.

Sales of vans, bakkies and minibuses during June, 2015 at 14 756 gained 1.5 percent, 223 higher than the 14 533 working vehicles sold during the corresponding month in 2014.

Exports, on the other hand, continued to increase; South African car plants exported 31 442 vehicles last month, an impressive 7930 or 33.8 percent more than the 23 492 despatched during June 2014. This keeps the industry projections of a record 330 000 exports for 2015 well within reach.
