It has to be one of the most bizarre recalls in recent automotive history - and definitely the smallest, involving just 13 cars worldwide.
But Volvo, which prides itself on its safety record, is taking this mini-recall very seriously indeed. It has told the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that seven 2011 model-year S40 sedan in the US, four in Canada and two in Puerto Rico may have a crack in the passenger-side support member, in the engine compartment.
Apparently a few of these components may have cracked during production and could reduce the strength of the passenger compartment in a crash.
Volvo's recall notice says dealers will inspect the area of the engine compartment around the base of the passenger-side A pillar for cracks and, if no crack is found, no further action is needed.
But, if the inspection does show up a crack, Volvo will simply replace the car - end of discussion.
It may only be 13 cars but Volvo's forthright and timely recall contrasts strongly with the ducking and diving we've seen from other automakers - it has even provided the VIN numbers of the cars involved:
