Vehicle sales continued to buck economic trends in November, with Naamsa's sales figures showing a total tally of 53 636, which is a 7.3 percent jump over November last year.

Naamsa attributes the surprisingly strong industry performance to historically low interest rates, strong replacement demand and a highly competitive trading environment.

However, a slowing economy and inflation (including that of vehicles on the back of a weaker rand) could put pressure on vehicle sales over the medium term.

Looking at the sales figures for individual models (which is missing the usual non-reporting culprits like Hyundai, Kia and Mercedes-Benz), Toyota's Hilux and VW's Polo Vivo continue to dominate the proceedings, but Toyota's Etios is gaining ground - it having broken through the 2000 barrier for the second month in a row.
