Johannesburg - Taxi operator Uber has reached a milestone, moving half a million people across the country in the two-and-half years since it hit the streets of South Africa.

In that period, Uber drivers have travelled about 93 million kilometres.

“It has been an absolutely exhilarating ride,” said Uber spokeswoman Jenni Newman in a statement.

She said Uber had become very popular among South Africans, with services such as uberBLACK, which is more executive; uberX for the lower market; and many more other options.

Uber offers riders a stylish experience as well as a reliable ride “at a touch of a button”.

UberVan caters for a group of more than five riders.

In the short time since Uber started operating in South Africa, it has created more than 4000 employment opportunities across the country.

Uber was launched in 2013 in Joburg, Pretoria and Cape Town and now operates in five South African cities.
