World's 10 best selling cars ever
Is the Toyota Corolla really the best vehicle in the world? That's a topic for a considerable debate, unless your criterion is based solely on sales figures.
Our UK correspondents at the Herald on Sunday have compiled a list of the ten best selling cars in the world and it's no surprise that the Toyota Corolla takes the top spot.
Toyota has managed to sell 39-million Corollas around the globe during a lifespan of 10 generations since 1966. Its reputation for reliability has clearly made up for its alleged lack of charisma.
The next global best-seller is something of a stereotypical American gas-guzzler. Like the Corolla it's now in its tenth generation and 34-million of them have been pleasuring the world's oil companies since 1948.
Another popular name takes third spot, with VW's Golf having accounted for 27-million sales in six generations since 1974 while the Beetle is just behind it in the success hierarchy with 23 million cars sold. Ford's Escort takes fifth place with 20-million sales between 1968 and 2003.
In sixth and seventh are Honda's Civic and Accord, accounting for 18-million and 17-million units respectively.
The world's first mass produced vehicle, the Ford Model T, takes eight position with 16.5-million sales while Volkswagen's Passat and Chevrolet's Impala complete the top 10 with 15-million and 14-million sales respectively.
