Resembling something of a deflated Alfa Romeo 8C with a few sharper edges chiselled in here and there, this sumptuous new concept car is undeniably one of the show stars at Geneva.

That's not the exciting news though. Alfa Romeo has already confirmed that a production version of the concept will hit the streets next year.

The 4C concept is a classic two-seat, mid-engined, rear-wheel drive compact sports car with a length measuring just four metres and a wheelbase of under 2.4-metres.

The design study also finds a good home for much of the carbon and aluminium construction materials that were found on the 8C, but there's no burbling V8 under this hood.

Instead, and in modern eco-friendly fashion, the 4C concept uses the same 1750cc direct injection four-cylinder turbo engine as found in the new Giulietta. As the company has not divulged any power outputs, whether it pushes more than the 173kW produced in the hatchback is really up to our imagination.

The engine sends its urge to the back wheels via Alfa Romeo's 'TCT' twin dry clutch transmission.

While the expected power output might not sound anything special for this kind of car, the 4C's lightweight construction results in a kerb weight of just 850kg - which means it weighs less than even a 1.2-litre Fiat 500.

Its kilo-shedding formula includes a carbonfibre body and a rear frame structure and crash boxes that use aluminium extensively.

The resulting power to weight ratio allows the car to screech from 0-100km/h in under five seconds and reach a top speed of more than 250km/h, according to Alfa Romeo.

Keeping it in check through the bends, the 4C has an advanced suspension set-up and a 40:60 front to rear weight distribution.

A final parting shot from Alfa Romeo's spin doctors should get your pulse racing if it isn't already: "Quite simply, this vehicle screams Alfa. Its sports car soul creates a unique driving sensation, both on the road and when racing, where its velocity and transverse acceleration become even more demanding."
