The Hyundai i20 is about to get blue on the inside and greener under the bonnet with minor changes to the aerodynamics and engine bringing about better fuel efficiency and a more stylish and better-equipped cabin.

The 1.2-litre petrol engine, one of the most efficient in its class, has cut its emissions by five g/km to 119g/km (below the SA 120g/km tax threshold that will come into effect in September).

The 1.4-litre engine's emissions have been cut by 13g/km to 129 - which in SA means you'll fork out R75x13 = R975 on top of the purchase price.

Two diesel engines available in some countries are down by six g/km to 110g/km and a six-speed gearbox, made possible by the higher torque inherent in diesel engines, has cut fuel consumption by 7.2 percent.

These improvements have come, Hyundai says, with a small spoiler under the car to improve airflow around the wheels, an Eco Drive indicator in the instrument panel to suggest the best point to change gear, low-friction engine oil and an alternator management system.

The two blue additions are on the fascia: it and the instrument illumination are now blue rather than red, bringing the i20 into line with larger Hyundai models. And Bluetooth phone connectivity now includes voice recognition on almost all models.

All i20s are covered by a manufacturer-backed, unlimited distance five-year warranty.

Hyundai SA thanked motoring.co.z for the information and has asked its product managers to query Korea on when South Africa might get the revised cars.
