Hyundai's generously-sized Santa Fe SUV is one of the most outdated vehicles in the line-up but it's soon to be at the cutting edge with the release of the third-generation model you see here.

The Korean carmaker has just released these first official images of it ahead of its public debut at the New York Auto Show early next month.

The designers of this new Santa Fe use the phrase 'Storm Edge' to describe the design mentality used here, in which they attempted to “capture the strong and dynamic images created by nature during the formation of a storm.”

Aiming to impart a “futuristic and urban-style SUV” image, the Santa Fe has a muscular interpretation of Hyundai's trademark hexagonal grille as well as wide bumpers and a two-tone voluminous bottom body section.

Hyundai tells us its core product concepts for this car are “Refinement,” “Smartness” and “Practicality”, and but would not go into any detail about the engines or specification.

The company does, however, promise cutting-edge technologies, good fuel economy and practical use of space.

Popular speculation also has it that a hybrid version of the new Santa Fe will eventually be offered, sharing its 2.4-litre petrol engine and electric motor combo with the Sonata Hybrid. Stay tuned for more info as it becomes available.
