Johannesburg - Kia’s facelifted Grand Sedona MPV has touched down in South Africa fresh from its debut at the New York Motor Show earlier this year, complete with enhanced looks, new variants, extra spec and a redesigned gearbox.
Exterior design changes are on the subtle side, with the usual mild revisions to both bumpers, as well as the headlights, grille and taillights.
The line-up has been slightly realigned with the discontinuation of the SX trim grade (which was second to top) and the addition of an EX+ mid-range trim.
Furthermore, the 3.3-litre V6 motor has been discontinued - no surprises there - leaving the acclaimed 2.2-litre turbodiesel as the only engine option. As before, this oil burner produces 147kW and 440Nm. It is mated to a brand new eight-speed automatic gearbox, which is standard across the range.
Talking line-up, the EX continues as the entry model, packing the usual comfort and safety essentials while also gaining a new 17.8cm touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. The new EX+ grade upgrades you to dual zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery, a bigger (as in 20.3cm) touchscreen command centre now incorporating satnav and reverse camera, as well as heated and auto-folding side mirrors.
The SXL grade continues to top the range with extra goodies such as electric operation for the tailgate and sliding side doors as well as the front seats, push-button start, a dual sunroof and Blind Spot Detection. Everything except a hot tub in other words.
The cabin seating configuration depends on the model, with EX and SXL derivatives coming standard with seven seats, although the EX can be ordered with an 11-seat interior, by special order only and requiring a four-month lead time. The mid-range EX+ comes only in eight-seat guise.
Safety across the range comes in the form of six airbags and ESC stability control.
Also part of the deal is a five-year/100 000km service plan and five-year, unlimited kilometre warranty.
