One of the best things about a supercar developed and built by a company that's primarily focused on Formula One is that development never stops.

The MP4-12C has been on sale for less than a year, but already McLaren has a package of updates that will enter production in September as a 2013 model, starting with revised programming for the engine computer that will give the 3.8-litre, twin-turbo V8 a swift kick in the bell-housing and boost power by 18kW, for total of 455kW.

Nice.

We're not so sure about this next one, though. Just like Jaguar's two-seaters, the 12C has a sound tube that directs intake roar into the cabin - but McLaren has added a set of valves so that the sound level in the cabin varies depending on which transmission mode is selected.

For 2013, there's new software that allows the driver to choose the level of cabin noise independently of the driving mode, depending on how interested you are in what your passenger has to say.

PRACTICAL STUFF

Then there's some practical stuff, such as an optional suspension lift mode - which can raise both ends of the car at low speeds to avoid the depredations of marauding speed-bumps and deeply-guttered driveways - and a new, improved radio aerial for the sound system (although that may seem a little pointless after reading the previous paragraph), while the brain behind the central touchscreen can now talk to Bluetooth and satnav.

But wait, as they say, there's more.

Starting from October this year , if you take your existing 12C back to your McLaren dealer, they'll install all the upgrades except the suspension lifters for free, as a compliment to those enthusiasts who put their money where McLaren's mouth was before a single car had been built.
