Stuttgart - Mercedes-AMG is preparing to pull the covers off its new A35 hot hatchback at the Paris Motor Show in early October and the teaser campaign has officially kicked off with these preview images.

The technical details are still under wraps for now, but word on the street is that the A35 will be powered by a detuned version of the 2-litre turbopetrol that powers the outgoing A45 model, producing around 225kW in this case.

Although there will of course be a new version of the hardcore A45 AMG, the A35 slots in as a more affordable alternative, strategically positioned to poach Golf R customers and those that want something hotter than an A250, but who can’t stretch to an A45.

The A35 will be fitted with 4Matic all-wheel-drive as standard, according to reports, with that and the suspension in a sporty state of tune and, as the preview images illustrate, hot hatch styling features to match.

South African availability and pricing have yet to be confirmed, although it would certainly be a logical choice for this hot-hatch-crazed country.
