Kyalami - Toyota used the SA Festival of Motoring to reveal a new version of its Etios called the Sprint, and it features a redesigned front end and other aesthetic perk-ups.

Set to go on sale during the first quarter of 2017, the Etios Sprint will replace the XS model, while the entry-level Xi will soldier on with the current look, although it will benefit from other upgrades.

Although its name might evoke some sort of performance expectation, there is no mention of any engine upgrades, meaning the Sprint will soldier on with the current and well proven 66kW 1.5-litre normally aspirated petrol engine.

It's all about aesthetics here and to that end the Sprint is set apart by a unique tapered grille design and large lower air dam, as well as twin-spoke 15-inch alloy wheels. Minor changes have also been made to the rear bumper, while the cabin has been freshened with some new materials.

Prices will only be announced nearer to launch, but if the currency slide continues then it's likely that the Sprint will cost more than the R166 400 commanded by the current XS hatch.
