According to reports, Tesla Motors of California is set to push the electric vehicle range boundaries with its Model S luxury sedan.

The limited edition will reportedly be capable of a range of 480km between charges. Other versions of the Model S, due to go on sale in 2012, have battery packs capable of driving 257km and 370km. For comparison's sake, a Nissan Leaf manages just 160km on a single charge.

George Blankenship, Tesla's vice president for worldwide sales, announced that the 480km Model S would go on sale 'Stateside from the middle of next year.

A right-hand-drive version of the Model S is also due to go on stream during 2012, which means it's not impossible that the electric car brand, in which Toyota owns shares, might come to South Africa.
