While the current Amarok lurks quietly in the shadow of the Hilux-Ranger sales battle, Volkswagen is hoping to up its game with a facelifted model that's due to be revealed soon.

The first two images in the gallery are very realistic official sketches released by Volkswagen but even so, you have to look closely to spot the external design changes.

While the headlight and grille alterations are extremely subtle, the bumper has a notably different design with sharper angles and a large scuff plate at the bottom, while new taillights adorn the rear.

The interior is where the real design party is happening and that's where change is most needed. The current model's dash is, in our humble opinion, rather plasticy and unsightly, but we also know that VW is capable of doing very classy interiors, better than most carmakers in fact. Look no further than the third pic in the gallery for evidence that the Amarok is finally getting its share of VW's cabin-crafting magic.

As for the engines, the teaser release mentions nothing, which could mean the company is simply planning to carry over the current 2-litre TDI units. Or will the company surprise us by answering bakkie fans' prayers with a new flagship featuring the Touareg's 3-litre V6 TDI? Watch this space.
