Hakskeen Pan - The Northern Cape will again open its dusty doors to welcome back petrolheads to this dusty, desolate playground for the third annual Kalahari Desert Speedweek.

Entries are now open for Speedweek’s third instalment, which is scheduled to run from 20 to 27 September at the same dry lakebed venue as the past two years. The event is open to anybody (no motorsport license is required) with the guts to hold a wide-open throttle over a perfectly flat five-kilometre clay strip.

Competitors and spectators are welcome to set up camp on the pan or stay in a pre-arranged tented community.

Booking is essential for either.

As usual a central marquee with a fully-stocked bar and bandstand will be built to host breakfasts, lunches and dinners, but perhaps more significantly acts as a meeting place for Aventador-driving playboys to share top-speed run happenings with grizzled Moto Guzzi riders.

The organisers say if it has an engine it’s eligible, and in past years have recorded top speeds of everything from 50cc pit bikes to modified Lamborghinis. Speedweek event is modelled after the Bonneville salt flats Speedweek held in the US each year, and like that historic meeting, attracts a wide range of adrenalin junkies all looking for foot-flat fixes.
