Jaap Luyendyk dies in Holland aged 82

Well-known former Cape Town racing driver Jaap Luyendyk (82) has died in Holland after a long illness.

Luyenkyk came to South Africa in from the Netherlands in the early 1960's, took over a service station in Sea Point then made his presence felt in Cape motorsport with a Lotus 7 and, later, an ex-Bill Jennings Riley Special.

The family returned to the Netherlands after 12 years but Luyendyk continued with his racing career and achieved his greatest triumph when he won the European Super Vee title at the ripe old age of 58.

Meanwhile his son, Arie, competed with even more distinction than his father. He won two Indianapolis 500 races (1990 and 1997), the 1989 Sebring 12-Hour and the 1998 Daytona 24-Hour.

Luyendyk's grandson, also called Arie, is now making a motorsport name for himself in the US in the Menards Infiniti Pro Series.

In addition to the boys, Luyendyk leaves his wife Jeanne and daughters Edith and Nel.
