Pro Tour brings national championship circuit racing back to Kyalami this Saturday, for Round 6 of the multi-faceted series.
Eye Candy for the day will be the GT Challenge contingent, with a variety of delectable sports cars waging war in three different classes. Heading the Class GTC1 title chase are Charl Arangies in a Noble and Rod Cole-Edwardes' Porsche 993.
They won't start as favourites though - that distinction will go to Toby Venter, making his second appearance this year in his works Porsche GT3 Cup racer.
Sun Moodley (Porsche 997), Andrew Culbert (Porsche GT3 Cup) and Ferrari 430 drivers Nicky Dicks and Jonathan Shenkman should fight for honours in Class GTC2 with Vernon Bricknell in his Porsche 996 RSR in close attendance.
Kris Budnik (BMW M3) is the man to beat in the GTC3 class, with his closest challengers Greg Parton (KTM X-Bow), Christo Lotter (Porsche GT3 Cup) and Deon du Plessis in another X-Bow.
GT CLASSICS
This historic category will bring 18 cars to this weekend's Kyalami party. George Avvakoumides leads the title chase in his Porsche 911 RSR, marginally ahead of Stefan Puschavez (Porsche 911), Willem van der Westhuizen (Porsche 911 RSR), Andreas Letnik (Porsche 928), Andrie Bester (Porsche 911), Jacques Viljoen (Porsche 911) and Donovan Symes (Porsche 935 replica).
In addition, a number of rapid Porsche 924's will round out the field, driven by Mark Harvey, Ray Wise, Paul Moss, Marius Wait, Hennie de Klerk, Wichard Cilliers, Jacqui Harvey and Richard de Roos.
FORMULA VEE
The open-wheeler races should provide some of the day's closest competition, with four drivers - Jaco Schriks, Alan Holm, Greg Wilson and Peter Hills - fighting it out for the championship title, each in a Rhema 2.
Others fighting for podium places should include Scott Temple, Symm Grobler and Gert Van Den Berg, in Rhema 2's and Johan Gouws in a Mantis.
KAWASAKI ZX10R MASTERS CUP
Pro Tour's showcase motorcycle series will see some 25 riders chasing one target - former SA Superbike champion Stewart Macleod, who has won every race he started so far this season.
The faces he will see if he looks over his shoulder, however, are likely to be those of Pieter de Vos and former off-road star Brian Bontekoning, with Joe Shearer, Paul Jacobs and Johan le Roux in close attendance.
GOLDWAGEN CHALLENGE
With more than 40 entries already confirmed, this is one of South Africa's largest racing categories. Topping the points in Class A is Waldie Meintjes (Polo), challenged by Gerhard Henning (Golf 2) and Derick Smalberger (Polo).
Darren Nathan leads Class B from Rory Atkinson (Polo) and Elna Croeser (Golf 1), while old-timers Jannie van Rooyen (Golf 1) and Henry van Vledder (Golf 2) are topping the points in Class C, ahead of their closest challenger, Andre Needham.
James Hurley (Golf 1) dominates the Class D field, but expect Lyle Ramsay (Golf 1) and Devon Piazza Musso (Golf 1) to change this soon.
V8 MASTERS
Joining the Pro Tour by invitation at Kyalami will be this one-make series, usually based at Cape Town's Killarney circuit. The big V8 engined, Owen Ashley-designed APV347is look and sound formidable, always providing a good spectacle for the fans.
Expect reigning champion Marcel Angel to be challenged by Fabio Tafani, Craig Jarvis, Jonny Bernstein, Oliver Dalais and Brian Evans, with Joburg racing legend Eddie Keizan also scheduled to make a welcome appearance in his APV347is this weekend.
Gates open at 8am on Saturday; entry is R70 for adults, under16's free.
