Johannesburg - Organisers behind SA’s national saloon car racing championship, Supa Production Cars, are planning a new small hatch-based category with an aim to cut costs and produce bigger fields next year.
The current Bridgestone Production Cars series comprises Class A (BMW 335i, Audi S4) and Class T (Golf GTI, Focus ST, Mini JCW) categories with each team running on multimillion-rand budgets, but the proposed new class should cost a fraction of the amount. Eligible cars for the yet-to-be-named category include Ford’s Fiesta ST, Citroën DS3, Fiat 500 Abarth, Peugeot 208 GTI, Renault Clio RS and Volkswagen Polo GTI, but other competitive entries could also be considered.
So far, technical specs state engine sizes from 1600cc downwards, and all cars will be fitted with the same make and spec turbocharger. Internal engine modifications will not be allowed, suspension systems will be supplied as kits, and all cars will get the same size wheels and tyres in an attempt to keep the grid as closely matched as possible. There will also be an allocation of tyres for the season.
