SHAKEDOWN RUN: This is the 599XX in testing at Ferrari's Fiorano test circuit in Maranello.

Ferrari's 599XX has become the first production-derived sports car to break the seven-minute barrier on the classic 20.832 km Nordschleife circuit at the Nurburgring, lapping in 6min58.16.

The 599XX, which inspired the 599 GTO, is designed for track use only but not for competition. It's a rolling laboratory for a number of new technologies, some of remain experimental while others have already filtered down to the 599 GTO, introduced on Friday at the

These include wheel doughnuts derived from Formula 1 which turbulence and thus drag, and improve brake cooling.

630KG OF DOWNFORCE AT 300KM/H

It's motivated by a development of the V12 engine used in the 599 GTB Fiorano and has Ferrari's high-performance dynamic concept, a novel integrated design and chassis set-up that uses sophisticated electronics to govern the mechanical limits of the handling for maximum performance.

It's also the first car to be fitted with what Ferrari calls Actiflow, a system that increases downforce and/or cuts drag depending on the car's trim during cornering. It can provide as much as 630kg of downforce at 300km/h, giving the 599XX extraordinary road-holding.
