Five people were arrested on Monday after two houses and a municipality office were torched during a protest in Ratanda near Heidelberg, Vaal police said.

The service delivery protest started around 7am on Monday in the informal settlement Ratanda, Constable Ntshidiseng Phakoe said.

The houses of two ward councillors and the local municipality office were set alight.

“More than 500 people are still protesting. The situation is under control but still very tense,” Phakoe said by 3pm.
