Kinshasa - Thirty-three people, including four babies, were killed in an accident involving an overcrowded lorry in the west of the Democratic Republic of Congo, police said on Monday.

The accident occurred on Sunday night at Pont-Kwango, a town in Bandundu Province, while the lorry belonging to a local business was on its way from Kikwit, the trading centre of the region, to Kinshasa.

"There were 33 dead and two seriously wounded. Nineteen bodies have been identified, including those of four babies," Bandundu's deputy police chief Fidele Sudi told AFP.

Police did not know how many people had been riding on the lorry, Sudi said.

Serious accidents are frequent in the DR Congo, in part because of the poor state of the roads and some vehicles. - Sapa-AFP
