Kinshasa - Four demonstrators were killed in clashes between police and anti-government protesters in Mbuji-Mayi in the central province of Kasai-Oriental in the Democratic Republic of Congo, police said on Sunday.

At least another seven people were injured in Saturday's clashes which erupted after supporters of the country's largest opposition party, the Union for Democracy and Social Progress (UDPS), took to the streets and began to erect barricades.

Police said they first tried to disperse the crowd with tear gas before using live ammunition.

The clashes lasted several hours, police said.

Mbuji-Mayi, a stronghold of veteran opposition politician Etienne Tshisekedi, has been repeatedly rocked by violence this year.
