Maputo - The Mozambican government has only managed to rebuild about 200 of the more than 2 000 houses destroyed in the Malhazine blasts in March this year.

Government spokesperson Luis Covane told Radio Mozambique on Tuesday that the government had managed to repair 229 houses, which were partially destroyed houses, while a further 500 were near completion.

At least 2 000 houses were destroyed in the blast which occurred at the national army's (FADM) Malhazine munitions dump situated in a residential area, a few kilometres from central Maputo.

Missiles and rockets flew in the air for about three hours and landed in the residential area, partially or completely destroying houses and businesses.

More than 100 people were killed and than 500 injured. - Sapa
