Luanda - Fifteen people died and 87 were injured - around 30 of them badly burned - when a truck loaded with 150 drums of petrol caught fire on Sunday at Viana, 30km north-east of Luanda.

The truck, which had apparently halted at a shantytown at Viana, caught fire around midday for reasons which were not immediately determined, destroying nearby houses and vehicles, the Viana administration said in a statement.

Most of the injured were taken to the Neves Bendina Hospital in Luanda, which specialises in burns, swamping its facilities, the radio said, adding that about 30 of them were in critical condition.

The fire had not been totally quelled by the end of the day. - Sapa-AFP
