Nato planners are drawing up options for a possible role for the alliance in Libya after the civil war in the North African nation ends.

An official said on Wednesday that military staff are looking at the possibility of providing support for a future United Nations mission to help stabilize the country.

Planners are expected to come up with a set of options within the next week to be presented to the alliance's political leadership for consideration, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of Nato rules.

On Tuesday, Nato spokeswoman Oana Lungescu laid out several conditions for such a mission, including a request for assistance from the UN and the proviso that Nato would have no troops on the ground in Libya. - Sapa-AP
