Accra - Gunmen attacked a police station in north-eastern Nigeria, killing at least four people, the country's news agency and local media reported Thursday.

“The police station and part of the one-story secretariat building were burnt by the gunmen, who also attacked a security checkpoint,” a witness in the town of Song in the north-eastern Adamawa state told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

It gave no further details.

It was the third attack on a police station in eight days, according to the Nigerian newspaper Premium Times.

The attacks have been blamed on the Islamist militant group Boko Haram, whose violent campaign against the government has killed some 1,400 people since 2010. - Sapa-dpa
