Khartoum - The swollen River Nile engulfed hundreds of houses and public buildings in northern Sudan's Dongola city after jumping its banks, state television reported late on Saturday.

Several neighbourhoods in the capital of Sudan's Northern State, some 500 kilometres north of Khartoum, have been devastated, along with a nearby village.

State television ran footage of buildings collapsing and people wading through floodwaters with light belongings on their heads, and of civilians, policemen and soldiers trying to mend embankments.

The northern state has announced a two-week state of emergency and closed all schools in the city, the report said.

Interior Minister Abdel Rahim Mohamed Hussein went to Dongola accompanied by representatives of relief agencies, the TV said, adding that the state government had appealed for sand bags, tents, insecticides and other relief items.

The authorities have not issued damage estimates but confirmed that no human casualties have occurred. - Sapa-AFP
