Dakar, Senegal - A Red Cross spokesman says a vehicle carrying five people has gone missing in northern Mali.

Jean-Yves Clemenzo said Monday that the International Committee of the Red Cross was last in touch with the vehicle Saturday morning and that it went missing later that day while traveling from the northern city of Kidal to Gao.

He said it was transporting four Malian employees of the ICRC as well as “one additional man who had attended a training with us.”

Clemenzo said the ICRC had received no reports on what might have happened.

Northern Mali fell under the control of al-Qaida-linked Islamic extremists before French staged a military intervention in early 2013, and security remains precarious.

Two French radio journalists were kidnapped from Kidal and killed in November.
