Paris -

A lawyer for a Rwandan former intelligence chief who was convicted in France's first genocide trial says he's filed an appeal for his client.

Defence lawyer Fabrice Epstein says he filed the appeal on Tuesday on behalf of Pascal Simbikangwa.

The 54-year-old Rwandan was sentenced to 25 years in prison on Friday on charges of genocide and complicity in crimes against humanity.

Epstein said by phone that judicial authorities would now set a date for the appeal hearing and that he didn't expect it to take place before 2015.

Simbikangwa was convicted in connection with Rwanda's genocide in which at least 500 000 people died over 100 days in mid-1994. - Sapa-AP
