Lusaka - A team of Scotland Yard detectives arrived in Lusaka on Saturday to assist Zambian police in solving the murder of ex-Zambian president Kenneth Kaunda's son, Wezi Kaunda, on November 4, a government spokesperson said.

Zambia approached the British government to send Scotland Yard detectives to assist in investigations following a request by the Kaunda family, Interior Minister Peter Machungwa said in a statement.

The charismatic 47-year-old Wezi Kaunda, who was a senior member of his father's opposition United National Independence Party (UNIP) and a former major in the Zambian army, was gunned down by four men when he and his wife returned to their Lusaka home on the night of November 4.

Two suspects, Moses Mulenga and Shaty Mubanga, have already appeared in court on charges of conspiracy to murder Wezi Kaunda. Two other suspects are still on the run.

Machungwa said the Kaunda family requested the assistance of British detectives so that their independent input and neutral investigations could assist in sustaining an air of transparency.

Kenneth Kaunda, who was in London when his son was killed, said in a statement on his return to Lusaka that he suspected some senior members of his opposition party were involved in the murder because Wezi intended to seek the powerful post of UNIP secretary-general. - Sapa-DPA
