Port Louis - Mauritius lost another head of state when acting President Angidi Chettiar became the second to quit in four days over an anti-terrorism bill which critics say gives too much power to the police.

Chettiar took over the largely ceremonial post on Friday when President Cassam Uteem resigned because he opposed parliament's approving the security bill.

"Government is perfectly right to introduce legislation against terrorism, but I have strong reservations about the content of the bill," Chettiar told a news conference.

Mauritian officials said Chief Justice Ariranga Pillay would become acting president until the national assembly elects a president and a vice-president on February 25.

Chettiar, who was nominated vice-president in June 1997, became acting president when Uteem resigned.

His term was due to end in June. - Reuters
