Family members of the Libyan rebel commander assassinated last week have demanded an open investigation and speedy trials for the perpetrators of his slaying.

The rebel leadership has insisted Abdel-Fattah Younis' killing was the work of Muammar Gaddafi's regime.

But several witnesses say Younis - who was Gaddafi's interior minister before defecting to the opposition earlier this year - was killed by fellow rebels.

Younis’s son and nephew blamed “traitors” in Libya's rebel-held east. They spoke to The Associated Press late on Monday.

His son, Moatasim Abdul Fatah, says he believes “individuals among us” carried out the killing, “first to stop this revolution and secondly to incite violence in liberated cities.” - Sapa-AP
