Harare, Zimbabwe - The Zimbabwean Prime Minister's party says there is increasing political violence against its supporters as political tensions rise before upcoming elections.

The Movement for Democratic Change party said Tuesday an arson attack against the home of an election candidate in eastern Zimbabwe killed the politician's 12-year-old son. The candidate's house has suffered nine attacks since the last violent and disputed elections in 2008, said a top party official. The attack was one of 120 incidents of violence recorded so far this year, he said.

Finance Minister Tendai Biti, the MDC's third ranking official, said the party is “enraged at the increase in politically motived violence throughout the country” that he blamed on a faction of President Robert Mugabe's party. The child's burial is to be on Thursday. - Sapa-AP
