Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma on Friday congratulated Pakalitha Mosisili on his election as prime minister of Lesotho, the international relations department said.

“President Zuma expressed his commitment to working closely with Prime Minister Mosisili to enhance the historical political relations which exist between South Africa and Lesotho, paying particular focus on strengthening economic and social co-operation,” the department said in a statement.

Zuma congratulated the country for holding peaceful and credible elections on February 28.

Mosisili's Democratic Congress won 47 seats in the country's national assembly, and Thomas Thabane's All Basotho Convention 46.

The Democratic Congress formed a coalition with six opposition parties to give Mosisili an outright majority with 18 extra seats.

Mosisili was prime minister from 1998 to 2012, when Thabane replaced him.
