Brits - Three alleged copper thieves appeared briefly in the Brits Magistrate’s Court on Friday, North West police said.

Police spokeswoman Pelonomi Makau said Luthari Chauke, 25, Enoch Mahlangu, 20, and Sam Khombula, 22, all from Mozambique, are accused of stealing R50,000 worth of copper cable.

They were arrested after the police received information from security officials.

“It is alleged that the suspects were seen carrying a cable, but ran away and vanished into the bushes near Mooinooi when security officials tried to stop them,” said Makau.

“The security officials immediately reported the matter to the Mooinooi police who responded swiftly and successfully apprehended the three suspects.”

She said the men were found hiding in one of the old mine shafts in Mooinooi where the copper cable was recovered.

“The cable was seized and the suspects were detained. Their case has been postponed until August 7. Investigation into the matter continues.”
