Mpumalanga - African National Congress (ANC) presidential hopeful Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma on Friday, said the ruling party would brainstorm ideas to develop South Africa’s economy at its up-coming elective conference in order to better the lives of the people.

Dlamini Zuma was addressing a crowd of about 300 people at a community hall in Mandela Village near KwaMhlanga in Mpumalanga. She said the conference would produce unity for the ANC.

“We say we are going to the ANC conference and we wish it can go well,” said Dlamini Zuma, who was accompanied by a number of ANC Women’s League (ANCWL) leaders including its president Bathabile Dlamini.

“The conference will produce unity for the ANC, so that we can go to the communities and speak to the people. We shall know what people say when we go to [the] 2019 [general elections]. We shall know how to resolve their problems. We are trying in other things like houses, schools clinics and [social] grants but if we don’t grow the economy, we might no longer have those grants.”

Dlamini Zuma and Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa are the frontrunners in a race to be elected the next ANC president.

Clad in ANCWL attire with an Ndebele traditional blanket wrapped around her shoulders, the former African Union chairperson invoked loud cheers from the crowd when entering the hall. Many people sang and said they were ready for her.

Dlamini Zuma, who is also an ANC Member of Parliament, also visited some homes and greeted residents in the area.

The ANCWL in Mpumalanga has nominated Dlamini Zuma as its preferred candidate for the ANC’s presidential position.

The ANC alliance partners in the province - the Congress of South African Trade Unions; the South African Communist Party; and the South African National Civic Organisation - have publicly backed Ramaphosa for the position.
