Johannesburg - Stability has been restored to Bekkersdal, the Gauteng African National Congress said on Wednesday.

“At this point, we have successfully stabilised and normalised the situation in these communities, and will be intensifying these interventions in hot spots moving forward,” provincial secretary David Makhura said in a statement.

This followed an agreement between the ANC tripartite alliance and residents of Bekkersdal and other areas where there have been protests.

Violent protests erupted in the township outside Westonaria several weeks ago, with people demanding better service delivery and the removal of their mayor. The protests were suspended last Sunday to allow government time to investigate residents' grievances.

“In all of these affected areas we are deeply pleased that these communities have expressed their continued confidence in the leadership of the ANC-led alliance,” he said.

He added that the ANC in Gauteng was on track with its election plans.

“We have visited all five regions to conduct intensive door-to-work and mass meetings in major townships of Gauteng.”

Makhura said over 60 000 volunteers were campaigning for the party in the province. He was confident that the party would get 70 percent of the votes in the province in next year's elections.
