Limpopo -

The ANC in Limpopo has praised the police for arresting a man suspected of smuggling cocaine with an estimated street value of R18 million into South Africa.

“We applaud the police for the swift response, because drugs are one of the contributory factors to crime in the country,” ANC Limpopo spokesman Sipho Dikgale said in a statement on Tuesday.

Kudinga Bunyabvabu, 36, was arrested at the Beit Bridge border post on Saturday, after the drugs were found in his luggage during a routine search.

The Congolese man appeared in the Musina Magistrate's Court on Monday on charges of smuggling and possession of drugs. The case was postponed to Monday, said Colonel Ronel Otto.

Dikgale praised police for another arrest near the border.

“We further give credit to the police for arresting cigarette smugglers with illegal cigarettes worth R500 000,” Dikgale said.

A 38-year-old South African man was arrested on the N1, between Musina and Beit Bridge, for possession of contraband cigarettes on Sunday.

He would appear soon in the Musina Magistrate's Court on smuggling charges, Otto said. - Sapa
