Johannesburg - The ANC in Gauteng will visit Bekkersdal on Sunday afternoon to discuss the recent protests, the party said.
“The (African National Congress) Gauteng leadership under the Chairperson Cde Paul Mashatile will be at Bekkersdal today (Sunday),” spokesman Dumisa Ntuli said in a statement.
They would meet with the community to address issues in the area after protests which have resulted in municipal properties being vandalised.
Ntuli said the meeting with the community was vital to calm the situation in order to deal with all service delivery matters.
He said the party needed to be visible in the area.
He also questioned the vandalising of property.
“No matter how angry the protesters are, they do not have the right to take the law into their own hands by burning government buildings, barricading roads and smashing moving cars on roads,” he said.
Ntuli said the violent conduct of protesters undermined the ANC's determined efforts to work to improve the lives of ordinary people in the affected areas.
“Any violent conduct to highlight certain demands cannot be accepted because it is tantamount to anarchy and disorder.”
Police spokesman Lt-Col Lungelo Dlamini said on Sunday morning a group prevented cleaning trucks from entering the township. He said by Sunday afternoon it was “quiet” again.
