Swellendam - Johannes Kana, the man accused of raping and murdering Anene Booysen, asked for forgiveness after confessing that he’d brutally attacked the teenager, the Swellendam Circuit Court heard on Tuesday, the second day of Kana’s trial.

Riaan Scheepers, a friend and colleague of Kana’s, continued giving evidence on Tuesday.

On Monday Scheepers told the court Kana had confessed to him that he had committed the crime, saying: “I’m sorry that I did it. It was me.”

On Tuesday Scheepers testified that Kana had told him he was sorry, and that he knew he wouldn’t believe him “and that we must forgive him”.

He said Kana had looked “like he was feeling down” when he had asked for forgiveness.

Scheepers, who worked as a fireman with Kana in Bredasdorp, said he had last seen 17-year-old Anene leaving a pub with Kana on the night she was raped and disembowelled.

Constable Ricardo Murtz, who was dispatched to the scene with a colleague after a guard found Anene at a building site, said on Monday that he had found the teenager lying on her back with her pants pulled down to her knees.

“I saw something that looked like intestines. It was hanging next to her legs… She was in too much pain and moaned the whole time.”

Anene died in Tygerberg Hospital on February 2.

The trial continues.
