Cape Town - Shoppers at the Kenilworth Centre in Claremont got a shock on Friday when brazen robbers stormed into the Telkom store, held up staff and stole cellphones and

tablets.

A worker at the mall says the incident happened shortly before 5pm.

“I came past the store so 5pm, and saw the commotion. The men were masked and wearing sunglasses and were pointing guns at the staff to open the cabinets and the storeroom. They were loading the cellphones into bags already,” she explains.

“They were pulling the people around and pointing the guns at them and I thought they are going to shoot them. I ran to get the security, but as I stepped away, they suddenly all headed for the door.”

The witness says she ducked into the emergency exit door and then heard people running: “They did not shoot at anyone, but threatened to do so. It was like a movie, man, I was in shock and could not do anything at all."

“I am just glad nobody was hurt when it happened,” she says.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana confirms the incident.

“This office confirms that a business robbery case has been opened for investigation. According to reports, four unidentified armed suspects entered a cell phone store in Claremont and threatened the employees with firearms,” she says.

“Before fleeing, they took an undisclosed number of cell phones and fled in a VW Golf 7."

“No shots were fired during the incident and no one has been arrested at this stage.”
