Cape Town – Police are investigating a case of arson after an office at a Cape Flats cop shop was mysteriously set alight.
Arsonists attempted burning and destroying vital documents in the evidence office of Grassy Park Police Station but police say they were not successful, as these documents are kept in a safe.
The incident took place on Saturday night.
It is unclear what caused the fire and police have yet to confirm whether it was a petrol bomb.
Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk confirms a case of arson has been opened for investigation: “This office can confirm a fire at Grassy Park SAPS and an arson case was opened for investigation. The investigation continues.”
On Wednesday, Grassy Park Police station commander, Colonel Shaun van Wyk, told the Daily Voice the attempt to burn vital police evidence was an act of treason but that the perpetrator had failed.

He urged the community to take ownership for State-owned property and to help cops bring criminals to book.
He added that the incident did not hamper police services at all: “A police station is a structure for the community."
“The person who did this, is committing high treason."
“We are currently investigating and we have our crime intelligence on this."
“We are encouraging the community to help police and to take responsibility to protect police and structures."
“Service delivery has not been hampered and it’s actually better.”
