Daily Voice readers have come forward and insisted that the Moonsamy brothers, who were allegedly assaulted by security guards after parking in a disabled bay, ARE the infamous “Kumars”.
Brothers Rayendren, 29, and Suresh, 28, say they and their cousin were beaten up by guards at Longbeach Mall in Noordhoek in an incident that was caught on security cameras.
The Pelican Park brothers claim they couldn’t move their red Ford Sierra because they were parked in, and that’s when about nine guards attacked them.
They said the iMvula security guards and shoppers called them the Kumars, a gang of aggressive beggars, claiming to be on holiday from Durban, who con people out of money by pretending their car is stuck without petrol.
Rayendren said they were at the mall to buy alcohol, to celebrate the fact that they had just bought a nice bakkie from someone in Kommetjie.
“People look at us and they throw comments saying ‘there go the Kumars,’” says Rayendren.
“Being mistaken and insulted because of this Kumar scandal hurts.
“ They cannot classify all Indians like that.”
After seeing the brothers’ photographs in the newspaper, however, several Daily Voice Facebook followers claim they are in fact the Kumars.
Greg Dacombe wrote. “These are definitely the ‘Kumars’. I have had several run-ins with them in the past. They probably provoked the attack, and there is no evidence they were parked in on camera.”
John Paterson posted: “They are scammers, met them in Velddrif. They said they ran out of petrol and needed money to get home!”
And one reader says the brothers were “up to their old tricks” again last Friday.
The male reader says he spotted one of the brothers and their red Ford Sierra near Canal Walk, begging motorists for petrol money after apparently breaking down at robots.
But their sister Prebastni Geldebloem, 31, says her brothers are innocent.
She says: “My brothers are not these Kumars that people are talking about. Nobody at the mall said that they were asking anyone for money. They have never had to.
“[After the assault they went to the Fish Hoek police station], but instead of taking their statements, they were thrown in the cells and the security guards who arrived after them were allowed to lay a charge first.”
The brothers went back two days later to lay a charge of assault against the guards.
Prebastni says her brothers have been in and out of hospital since the March 7 attack, because they “can’t stand intense pain”.
Suresh says he has also recovered his memory after suffering a blow to the head.
“We have laid a charge of assault, but are also seeking legal counsel to ensure these guards do not get away with what they did,” says Prebastni.
“The right thing to do would have been to clamp the wheel and wait for the police.”
Police spokesperson Constable Noloyiso Rwexana confirms charges of of common assault were laid against the security guards on March 9.
“Five suspects between the ages of 22 and 38 were arrested,” she said.
