Cape Town - Linda Ntulo, the man accused of killing Khayelitsha mother Aviwe Jam Jam and dumping her body in Athlone, has appointed a new lawyer from prominent legal figure William Booth’s firm.
On Tuesday, David Mbazwana, who represented Ntulo and his co-accused Leroy Morris, told the Athlone Magistrate’s Court Ntulo, 26, had terminated his contract.
Mbazwana would remain on record for Morris only.
Danielle Sive, from the firm, confirmed that it would be representing Ntulo. She said lawyer Asghar Mia would be proceeding with Ntulo’s bail application on the next court appearance, on October 18.
Ntulo has been in custody for more than a month.
The State said it was ready to proceed with the bail application and would be sending all necessary documents needed by the defence to compile its case by the end of the day.
Ntulo and Morris both face charges of murder. It is believed Ntulo beat Jam Jam, 26, and was helped by Morris to dispose of the body.
Ntulo and Jam Jam were in a relationship and had a 2-year-old son together. They lived in Summerville Estate, in Kuilsriver, where Jam Jam was last seen alive. Her body was found in Vygieskraal by police on July 29.
Her family was only informed of her death 10 days later.
It was during the same period that Ntulo travelled to Johannesburg. On his return earlier last month, he was arrested for the attempted murder of Jam Jam’s stepfather, Mike Ngugo, after he and his friends allegedly attacked him with pangas.
The case is being heard at the Khayelitsha Magistrate’s Court and bail application is set for October, 30.
In their last court appearance, Mbazwana said Morris was suffering from appendicitis and was in need of urgent medical attention.
He told the court Pollsmoor Prison was not able to offer Morris any treatment apart from prescribing pain tablets.
“Accused number two is suffering from stomach pains, this has to do with his appendix. He has been given pain tablets, but the tablets are not effective. The only way he will be okay is to undergo an appendix operation,” he said.
