It was a scene straight out of the movies: a Lansdowne man proposed to his girlfriend on the big screen as she watched from the audience in a local movie theatre.

Sameera Allie, 25, gaped in astonishment as her boyfriend Mubeen Allie, 28 – the couple have the same surname – appeared on the screen at Cinema Nouveau in Cavendish in a short film called Until I Met You.

She was even more shocked when he burst into the cinema, got down on one knee, presented her with a diamond ring and asked her to marry him.

It took Mubeen two weeks and a lot of planning to make the five-minute video, which was screened on Wednesday night, his birthday.

Mubeen had convinced Sameera to meet him at the cinema to watch a short documentary, which he said had been shot by a relative.

The film was actually made by professional production company.

On arriving at the cinema with a friend, Sameera did not notice her friends in the audience.

Until I Met You began with a series of interviews with different people about love. The action cut to two figures – one of them Mubeen – sitting on the rocks in Sea Point with their backs to the camera.

As Mubeen opened a ring box to show the stranger the diamond ring he had bought Sameera, his girlfriend recognised his voice.

The film ended with Mubeen racing into the cinema. The next instant he was on his knees in front of Sameera, asking her to marry him.

“I got the shock of my life,” she said. Her response? A very delighted “yes”. The couple are planning to tie the knot in April.
